Almost every single person has suffered from some kind of acne during the course of their lives. Blame it on your hormones, the weather, horrible eating habits, or any other bodily function issue, but you can’t run away from it. What’s worse than having those pesky pimples on your face? The long-lasting acne scars they leave behind..

When large pimples or acne are left untreated, they may heal with a pit or a depression or what is known as a scar due to severe inflammation. Those with oily skin type, high levels of androgens and PCOS are likely to scar more.

While not treating your acne can result in scarring, we’re all guilty of what really leaves a mark—picking on them. Self-picking or bursting the blackheads, whiteheads, pustules and pimples is another reason for acne scarring. These will result in blemishes and pits.

Down to the real deal: what should you really be using to get rid of them? For mild scars, one may use a retinol- or glycolic acid-based product on alternate nights. Avoid using too much product and avoid daily use as it may cause irritation and severe scaling. For blemishes, one may use products with Vitamin C, kojic, arbutin, lactic, mandelic or salicylic acid in them.

While you can use face washes, day creams and targeted pimple treatments with the above ingredients, prevention is better than cure, so focus on building a skincare routine that doesn’t hamper your skin for the long run. I will give you the low-down:

Leave it alone: Do not pick at the acne. That one pimple on your face may be difficult to resist, but pop it and you will end up with an ugly scar which may even take two years to go on its own. Secondly, touching or popping your zits will result in bacterial infection and pus formation.

Don’t go overboard: Scrubbing or exfoliating too much will also disrupt the protective layer of the skin, causing more damage and pigmentation.

Clean and clean: Not cleansing your face at bedtime, not removing make-up before you sleep will clog pores resulting in more acne and acne scars.

Get professional help: Get a clean-up at a skin clinic once in a month if you get regular break outs or blackheads. This will prevent the formation of deep scars. Remember that this is a catch-22 situation. If the clean-up is not done correctly, you may still end up with scars.

You can also ask your skin care professional for more intensive acne scar treatments in cases the scars are old and simply refuse to go. If the scars are old or do not improve with creams, one may go for a glycolic, mandelic, tretinoin or TCA (trichloroacetic acid) peel. If the pits are mild, microneedling with a microneedling pen like MD Needle Pen helps in young skin. For deep pits, you can to do a combination of fractional lasers like CO2, or microneedling and peels.
